The Star-Ledger put out an interesting article today: 87 things about New Jersey golf. Here are numbers 8, 9, and 10 to wet your whistle:

8. The PGA Championship is returning to New Jersey for the first time since 1942, when it was held at Seaview Country Club in Atlantic City.

9. Baltusrol was named after a murder victim. Baltus Roll was a farmer who was dragged out of his home by two masked men in the middle of the night on Feb. 22, 1831, and killed. One of the alleged assailants committed suicide before he was apprehended. In what was called “the trial of the century,” with a New Jersey Supreme Court justice presiding, the other suspect was found not guilty because most of the evidence was circumstantial and inadmissible. But he was convicted of four related charges of forgery, sentenced to 24 years and died in prison.

10. Ridgewood Country Club was the site of the 1935 Ryder Cup, won easily by the Americans over the British squad. Ridgewood Country Club has been the host for that Ryder Cup — when Byron Nelson was an assistant pro — the U.S. Senior Amateur, the U.S. Amateur, the U.S. Senior Open and the Senior PGA Championship.
