Private golf clubs secretly selling teetimes

Great article by Bloomberg: Top Golf Clubs, Losing Members, Quietly Sell Games on the Cheap. Seems some expensive clubs are discreetly selling vacant tee times to companies such as Tour GCX which in turn sells fractional or time-share memberships which provide its customers access to a variety of private clubs. The Tour GCX website explains it this way:

TOUR GCX members purchase a pre-determined number of tee units. Each tee unit can be redeemed for an unescorted foursome at private clubs within the TOUR GCX network. Tee units can also be applied towards TOUR GCX Special Events and other exclusive TOUR golf experiences.

Bloomberg notes this as a primary reason: Private U.S. golf courses, with $14 billion in annual revenue, are mired in a bunker of declining members and flat earnings, according to club officials and resort companies such as Dallas- based ClubCorp Inc.
