Examiner reports: Bill Miscoski said he was a bit depressed last week when his family sold its Cream Ridge Golf Club (CRGC) to the state. The N.J. Department of Environmental Protec-tion (DEP) joined with Upper Freehold Township to purchase the tract on Route 539. The 186-acre parcel will still operate as a golf course, and Miscoski will continue to lease and run it for the next five years.
The article also notes the following:
The DEP's Green Acres Program purchased two golf courses in 2005 and is presently negotiating to buy three more.
The Green Acres Program purchases land to protect environmentally sensitive open space, water resources and other significant natural and historical open space. Land acquired becomes part of the statewide system of parks and forests, wildlife-management areas and natural areas.
So far this year, Green Acres has preserved or helped preserve 4,540 acres of open space. Since its inception in 1961, the program has protected more than 600,000 acres of open space, in addition to providing funding for the development of hundreds of parks throughout the state. New Jersey's statewide system of preserved open space and farmland now amounts to more than 1.3 million acres.
