The state Green Acres Program purchased the bankrupt golf course last week for $8.45 million with plans to turn it over to the state Division of Fish and Wildlife to manage. Plans were announced to make it a birding area for eco-tourists, although public recreation uses have not been ruled out.

The civic groups that fought to prevent the course from becoming a housing development will now fight to keep the course open for public recreation, says the paper.
