the warm weather couldn’t have come at a more opportune time as many public courses that usually sleep through January under a blanket of snow are still open. That’s a blessing after having struggled through a wet and wild 2010. From early spring floods, to Irene’s late-summer landfall, to the freak October snowstorm, golf courses lost prime playing time throughout the year…

Climate figures confirm that last year was indeed the worst — at least since Walter Hagen swung a club. The state broke a record for precipitation, said state climatologist David Robinson.

Shackamaxon was founded in 1916 and features a historic A.W. Tillinghast golf course. The championship, par-71 layout boasts one of the most famous holes in the New York-metro area: the ninth-hole island green, one of Tillinghast’s first island green creations.

Breast Wishes first ever golf outing!

On 7 October 2011, Breast Wishes will be hosting its first ever golf outing at The Meadows Golf Club in Lincoln Park. Check-in is at 9:30am, and the day consists of a shotgun (best ball scramble) start at 10am, treats throughout the day, an open bar at the 19th hole, an early dinner, and lots of fun. All for only $125 per player!

Breast Wishes is a team of walkers from Lincoln Park who participate in the Avon Walk in NYC, the proceeds from which go towards breast cancer research and treatment. The walkers complete a marathon and a half (that’s 39.3 miles!) over the course of two days, and are obliged to raise at least $1,800 per walker. For this year’s team of five walkers, that’s a total minimum of $9,000!

Shackamaxon Golf and Country Club Settlement May Allow Condo Development

Shackamaxon Plan May Add Condos: The eventual owners of Shackamaxon Golf and Country Club will be permitted to build up to 60 age-restricted luxury condos on a 12-acre parcel at the center of the property, according to a preliminary settlement reached by Shackamaxon, New Jersey Golf Group, the Township of Scotch Plains and the Scotch Plains Planning Board. In exchange for the deal, the club’s owner – almost assuredly New Jersey Golf – must pay the township $475,000 for the deal on the club, which reportedly owes millions of dollars to Valley National Bank.

Mercer County Courses “Dodged a Bullet”

Mercer County courses bounce back via NJ.com: “…as of this morning, three of the four Mercer County golf courses will have been reopened after Hurricane Irene swept through the county and the state over the weekend, causing all four of the county courses — Mountain View, Princeton Country Club, Mercer Oaks East and Mercer Oaks West — to close on Sunday. The Mercer County Park Commission had its golf course work crews on a huge cleanup detail Monday and yesterday, removing debris, fixing bridges and cart paths, and helping Mother Nature to dry the fairways and greens. The results were that Mercer Oaks East reopened yesterday for a morning tournament and Mountain View resumed golf action yesterday afternoon. Mercer Oaks West was scheduled for reopening at 7 a.m. today.”

Banking on the Barclays: When the Barclays pro golf tournament comes to Plainfield Country Club this week, green won’t just be the predominant color on the course, but off it, as well. Hundreds of local businesses and charities will benefit from the expected $50 million economic impact of the weeklong event, authorities said. More than 100,000 people are expected to visit Edison, which is hosting the event, and the surrounding communities of Plainfield, Scotch Plains, Clark, Woodbridge, Metuchen, South Plainfield and New Brunswick while the tournament takes place from Thursday to Sunday. Public events start at the magnificently refurbished Top 100 course on Tuesday.
